I'm Julie. I'm married with one dog and I use this space to talk about the clothes I wear, the food I cook, the things I love, and what inspires me. The latter includes, but is not limited to wine, guacamole, my DVR, and pretty pictures.

(fashion) the moral of the story

(top: LNA // skirt: (the now defunct) Lauren Conrad Collection // shoes: (the now defunct) Bitten by Sarah Jessica Parker // sunnies: Target // bracelets: Jewelmint)

My oh my, I seem to be doing a lot of “fashion blogger hair push” in these photos. Whatever, let’s not focus on that obvious cliche and instead please turn your attention to the awesomeness of this shirt. I love a good backless shirt and am so excited to finally bust this one out, which I did for a recent lunch date with Jason. We ate at our favorite Lebanese restaurant, Sitti, and then spent a few minutes walking around different parts of downtown.
We saw the most beautiful church (below) that I had never really noticed before. The gates to the gardens of the church were locked. I tried to convince Jason that we should just hop the fence and go exploring, but in the end we decided that trespassing on church property is probably not a good idea. I hope you got that moral and pious decision down in your books, Big Guy!

Blogiversary: Fashion Faux Pas
A reader recently asked me to share some fashion faux pas and I thought that was a smashing idea. I culled through my photos to pull out some of my more… um… memorable fashion moments.
Two things to note:
1. I am very thankful that a great many of my highschool outfits are hidden away somewhere at my parent’s house. If I ever get my hands on those, I’ll do a part II. You’re welcome.
2. I am also very thankful that I joined a sorority in college where I learned to dress like everyone else lest I meet the fate of being shunned by my “sisters” (p.s. sarcasm). Many of my college outfits weren’t really all that bad. Sort of boring (polo dress during greek week, jeans with button down for a night out), but not bad.
Anywho, on to the highlights (faces of the innocent have been concealed)…
I’m 11 years old in this picture. Things to note are my fantastically white Keds, blindingly bright ankle socks, rolled up jorts and tucked in long sleeve shirt. The recorder I’m holding is a nice touch. Honorable mention goes to my sister’s coordinating shirt/short look.
This picture is getting its due notice thanks to my super haircut. I’m 12 here, and my mom was still cutting my hair.
This photo was taken at the last middle school dance of my seventh grade career. Note to all the children reading this blog, this photo is called a polaroid. Say it with me now: pole-a-roid. We didn’t have digital cameras back then. I loved this dress. I got it from The Limited Too which I think is now called Justice which I am pretty sure would never carry this kind of almost floor length dress with a sailor style cape attached. Remember when you could sign up to be a Limited Too “model” and stand outside the door wearing their clothes? I’m also pretty sure I wore this dress to every single dance that year and also every Friday. Oh, and check out my sweet kicks, black slip-on Keds. Also, I think my school really went all out with this balloon arch.
Let’s fast forward to my junior year of high school (like I said my mom has most of my HS pictures). This is the sports banquet where I’m getting a pin for my letter jacket. This outfit is not all that bad, but please pay attention to my platform flip flops. They are not made out of wood as you might guess at first glance. Rather, they are made out of foam that has been colored to look like wood. Oh, and they are white. Lovely.
On to college before I learned the sorority girl ways. Here I am at a keg party (obviously) rocking my pleather skirt from Wet Seal and my one-shoulder top from American Eagle. Totally (not)sweet.
This picture is also from freshman year of college (le sigh). I’m at spring break in Daytona Beach. Now, I’ve always had a thing for backless shirts but there is no excuse for this one. I should have known better.
That’s all folks. Like I said, if I can get my hands on them, I’ll pull together a part II featuring outfits from my highschool days. Those were some gems.

fashionSPARK
One of the things that I think Raleigh has started doing really well in the last five years is promoting the creativity and artistic talent that’s right here in our area. And a big part of that is owed to the annual SPARKCON event – held over four days and promoting creativity in everything from fashion to art to literature to dance to theatre. I think it’s just fantastic.
Friday night, I had the pleasure of attending the fashionSPARK event. There was a little confusion in trying to find my seat, which serendipitously led me backstage to where all the models were hanging out. I felt cool and got to check out some looks before they hit the runway, so I’m not complaining.

I looooved this blue dress and will dream of the day when I have an occassion to wear it. So beautimous! (Also, I am basically a terrible blogger and have already forgotten the designer of this one, so if you are reading this and happen to know please tell me and I will update accordingly.**UPDATE: The designer is Payton-Alexis and you can find her beautiful confections in dress form here**)And check out those adorable little girls modeling a children’s line. Precious!

Lady Gaga meets Alice in Wonderland.

You know I love me a good backless shirt! And this one from Jessica Domino did not disappoint.

Mr. Spark himself showed up on a building.

Jaclyn Anthony Designs represented with some covetable body jewelry.

I loved this beyond frilly dress. (Also by Jessica Domino)

And this black dress with its powerful shoulders (and open back which you can’t see. obviously) was swoonworthy. (again, I stink and forgot the designer. fml. please let me know if you are in the know)

I loved the colors and casual comfort of this look from Raleigh Denim.
And that my friends are the highlights from yours truly.
There was a lot of creativity to be seen and I took a lot of pictures. If you want to see them all, check out my flickr set.

Shopbop has my number today
They’re featuring a glorious array of backless, cut-out and otherwise sweetly seductive back revealing dresses and tops. While some gals prefer to show off cleavage, I prefer to show a little back (mostly because… um… I have no cleavage).
My personal faves are:
This Haute Hippe number

This Twelfth Street dress

This Blue Life seksi thang

And this demure yet show stopping Geren Ford top

But you can check ‘em all out here.
