I’m traveling halfway across the country to be with my family for the next few days. In the meantime, please enjoy this post from Emily of Emphasis Added! I forget how I found Em’s blog many moons ago, but I’ve been hooked ever since (I even turned her into a IRL friend). She’s super smart, super funny, super pretty, super nice, and has a super shoe collection. And she’s about to be a super mom. Here, she shares her super wisdom in online shopping. I even learned a thing or two!
On the list of things I love with unapologetic enthusiasm:
The way I feel in sky-high heels, Chili Powder on Mangos
Christmas shopping. (true love, I say!)
Despite my affinity for the festive madness of stores during this time of year….I much prefer to complete my holiday shopping online.
And as a self-proclaimed expert (someone who earns her paycheck working in online advertising & spends it on online goods), I wanted to share some tips for scoring the best deals of the season with all of you, Ms. Julie’s gorgeous readers:
Look for Discounts in the Right Place: Always, once more for dramatic effect, ALWAYS Check out coupon sites like Coupon Cabin and Retail Me Not before making a purchase. Did you know that most of your favorite stores offer aggressive (and sometimes exclusive) discounts and codes on these popular sites. (I used to think I could find the best coupon codes with a simple Google search, but have since discovered that most advertisers prohibit sites from bidding on their brand terms….meaning you are way better off just visiting Coupon Cabin or Retail Me Not and searching for sales there.)
Use online sample sales to your advantage: I could never afford to give designer treats to everyone on my Christmas list….unless those designer treats are super discounted! Over the past few weeks, I have been scouring Gilt, RueLaLa & One King’s Lane to find indulgent gifts at a fraction of the price. I have had particular luck in the scarves, handbags and jewelry-focused sales. One warning: when buying from these sites the return policies are rather limited (but then again, who is really going to send back a Lauren Merkin bag. Right?)
Know Your Dates:
- Black Friday (November 26): Many advertisers start their Cyber Monday offers a few days early to woo the shoppers who think standing in line for door-busters is both embarrassing and ridiculous.
- Cyber Monday (November 29):Cyber Monday is the biggest day of the year for online retailers, who roll out their deepest discounts to ensure they capture the virtual shoppers’ attention. Odds are, you won’t find any offers more aggressive than these throughout the remainder of the season.
- Cyber Monday II (December 13): Many peeps don’t realize this, but December 13 is the second busiest online day of the year. Stores view this is as their last chance to make a sale…and they roll out offers accordingly! For those of you who miss out on Cyber Monday action, you might want to hold out and for these one-day promotions.
- Free Shipping Day (December 17): This day marks the cut-off for on-time Christmas delivery, and as an added incentive many brands offer free shipping. Woot! To see a thorough list of stores offering free shipping visit freeshippingday.com. Also, don’t expect to see any deep discounts after the 17th because stores will be catering to desperate last minute shoppers
The best part about saving cash money while online shopping for friends and family…is that it gives you a perfect excuse to engage in a little one-for-you, one-for-me holiday generosity!
‘Tis the season!
